WHAT WE TREAT
Lower Back Pain
The lower back plays a crucial role in nearly every movement you make throughout the day. Injury or dysfunction in this region can be highly debilitating. Lower back pain is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition that ranges from a dull, persistent ache to severe, sharp limiting pain. At Active Health, our physiotherapists are skilled at assessing and rehabilitating lower back pain to help you regain comfortable, confident movement.
Common Causes of Lower Back Pain
Muscle strains
Muscle strains often cause lower back pain, leading to tenderness and limited range of motion. Despite the discomfort, these symptoms usually improve with physiotherapy and rarely indicate significant structural damage.
Muscle spasm
Sudden tightening of the muscles around the spine can cause intense pain and restricted movement. Spasms often act as a protective response and usually improve with manual therapy, gentle mobility, and guided rehabilitation.
Sciatica
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed, often due to a disc injury or inflammation. This can cause lower back pain that radiates into the buttock, leg, or foot, sometimes with tingling, numbness, or weakness. Targeted rehabilitation is often effective in reducing symptoms and restoring function.
Osteoarthritis
Wear and tear on the spinal joints can cause stiffness, reduced mobility, and discomfort as cartilage gradually deteriorates.
Degenerative disc disease
Age-related changes in the intervertebral discs can reduce their hydration and elasticity, leading to pain and limited mobility.
Disc prolapse (bulged disc)
When an intervertebral disc protrudes, it may irritate nearby nerves, causing back or leg pain, numbness, or weakness. Disc prolapse often responds well to structured rehabilitation.
Spinal stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal can compress nerves, leading to back pain, tingling, numbness, or leg weakness.
