Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a treatment that is highly effective for long standing tendon and muscle pain that is not improving with traditional exercise and manual physiotherapy treatments. It delivers targeted impulses of high energy acoustic pressure to damaged tissues. These impulses create controlled microtrauma, which stimulates a natural inflammatory and healing response. As the body begins repairing the area, new blood vessels form, circulation improves, and cell regeneration is stimulated — ultimately reducing pain and supporting long-term tissue recovery.

How Are Shockwave Treatments Performed?

During treatment, a handheld probe is placed against the affected area, using gel to help conduct the shockwaves through the skin. The impulses spread into the injured tissue as a radial, aspherical wave.

You will feel these impulses as rhythmic pulses. They can be a little uncomfortable, but the intensity is always adjusted to your comfort level. Your first session typically begins at a low setting and gradually increases as tolerated.

Our Approach at Active Health

Shockwave is not a standalone treatment. The best outcomes occur when we address not only the painful area but also the underlying causes — whether related to posture, biomechanics, muscle imbalance, training load, or daily habits.

That’s why we offer Shockwave Therapy as part of a physiotherapy consultation, integrating it into a personalised, whole-body treatment plan. This ensures you receive both symptom relief and long-term solutions.

There is an additional £20 fee per session for shockwave therapy.
