Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy in Edinburgh

ESWT (Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy) therapy is a non-surgical treatment, and works by delivering impulses of energy, targeted to specific damaged tissues. This causes microtrauma to the tissue that it is directed at and this initiates a inflammatory response which is what triggers a healing response from the body. The healing response causes blood vessels to form and nutrients to be delivered to the area stimulating cell regeneration and healing and decreasing pain.

how are the treatments performed?

A probe is pressed on to the affected area and the shockwaves are delivered through the skin with the aid of some gel. The impulses are delivered as a shockwave that spreads inside the injured tissue as an aspherical ‘radial' wave.

The shockwaves are felt as pulses which are a little uncomfortable. Typically your first treatment will start with a low level of intensity and increase this to a point where you feel comfortable.

Shock-wave therapy treatments are usually performed at weekly intervals and you may need between 3 and 5 treatments.

Many patients experience an improvement in symptoms almost immediately while others take several weeks to respond. You may notice a reddening of the area with some patients experiencing a brief increase in pain. It may take several weeks to see an overall benefit.

Shockwave can be effective on a wide range of soft tissue and bony conditions such as achilles tendonopathy, plantar fasciitis, tennis and golfers elbow, patellar tendonopathy, shoulder pain (eg rotator cuff injuries and calcific tendonitis).
